Oh wow all of Sienna Miller’s looks are so good! I have the same problem as you with long coats and I find that I can get away with one if it’s a very straight, slim fit or if its fitted in the shoulders and flairs because then it doesn’t overwhelm me as much.
My best formula for staying warm when I lived in Canada: silk longjohns as base layer, wool layer over that, and down on top. The silk/wool/down combo was unbeatable even with all the new synthetic fabrics they have going on now.
Silk/Wool/Down, this is a fabulous practical top and I’m now going to be searching for silk longjohns for wearing under jeans. Nothing kills me more than cold denim on my skin 😂🥶
Loved this, fun and practical as always! And validating my excitement to wear my aunt's handed-down mink coat to thanksgiving over sweats and sparkly top ;)
What really validated me was the more classically cut long coats in your images! I almost gave this fur coat away because though it’s boxy enough to layer over a sweater, it also has a clearly defined waist (it’s belt/wrap style). Your pics made me see that with the right chill elements underneath I can make it work! Thanking past self for not selling and waiting for the right styling inspo to come along.
YES! Honestly pulling all these photos was a lesson for me too because I nearly donated a long coat of mine and then I realized that (1) I want to lean in to the long silhouette and (2) I know I can figure it out with all this inspiration bouncing around now.
You’ve spoken to every one of my concerns. Wearing a puffer always feels like giving up, but maybe not anymore. Also have those Loeffler Randall boots in my cart and may take this as a sign.
Loved this. Vicariously though because I do not need to buy any more costs or jackets, they’re my biggest weakness. I’m living out of a suitcase right now and still counted eight coats and jackets just last night when I was trying to figure out how I’ll get all my stuff to my next destination. There are at least that many in storage too. BUT, controversial opinion, I’m 5 foot 2 and have completely converted to long coats because they make me look taller! That long sweeping line does me wonders whereas I feel like jackets at the hip cut me in half and those that come mid-thigh cut my legs in half. And they do not need shortening.
Yes!! Lindsey convince me!! My question for you, because we are similar heights, are you able to find ones that hit an ankle?! I don’t want it on the ground.
They were part of my inspo for trying the sweeping coat look! I mean we’re positively statuesque in comparison… I tend to go for ones that are shin-length/past the knee on the model and on me they’ll be ankle-length. Might not work as well if you’re going for a more fitted style since the proportions could be off but I tend to go for an oversized look and that works fine! But yeah, I have sometimes seen ankle length ones that I know will be on the floor with me and I just have to let go of them.
One thing that I have noticed with nearly all fabulous coat/jacket outfit pics: Everyone seems to wear them open! My struggle is to not look boring when my coat needs to stay closed. Which - let’s be honest - is most of the time 😆.
I totally get this! When I was doing this exercise I realized that the emphasis was on layers underneath coats to accommodate opening them up BUT I do think scarves are a good way to add something of interest there.
Hi from FL where sadly not much applies to me but I do have that Madewell striped rugby shirt, and I put it on as soon as I get home from work (almost every day, like a weirdo) bc it makes me feel cool as hell. Siennnnnaaaaa is the world's greatest. If I could put in a request to see/learn more about how to style grey sweatpants? This is a lane I'd like to go down and not look like a high schooler. And if the answer is "avoid, they're so high school" I will accept that answer too. Xx
Jennifer you have my wheels turning that perhaps I need to do a styling series; Jean jackets have been on my mind because I know that Gen Z hates them but my millennial heart will never let them go 😂 I’m on it!!
Love all of Sienna’s looks!! That long denim coat, especially. And Grece in the purple-swoon! I absolutely love how you showed the side by side difference in styling!!
As someone who lives in a cold, snowy part of Canada, I can get so lazy when it comes to dressing for winter. I appreciate this post and all the inspo so much! x
This is so good as it’s in the 30s in suburban Chicago this week. I will be consulting this each morning as I look out my frosty window at what the day brings!
This is so helpful and made me really excited for my move back East next month!! Bring on the snow. Also, stalking your Pinterest now for more inspo, thank you very much.

LLBean is my go to source for silk long underwear 😊

Eeep! A hand-me-down MINK COAT!! Incredible.

Can’t wait to see pics of how you wear yours💖
So much great inspo. I'm a big fan of the long coat. Like you said, wear whatever you want underneath and it always looks good!
You are really the queen of coats for me!!

Girl those boots are something!!! They are saved to a special list of items that I hope Santa brings me 😂
Kelly!!!! Thank you so much for this post! I, moms and people that live in cold weather can’t thank you enough! I feel so seen! 🥰🥰
How ironic that it’s been so pretty since that snow?! But now I know what to shop for and how to style 😂
Well I hear more is coming at least in the mountains here! Gah! ❄️ but now we will for sure be the “cool moms” 😆

Also if MK&A can pull it off then surely I could too 😂😉
