Ahhhh love this, def saving!! TY so much for the intro Bari’s newsletter, subscribed right after seeing that exact note! For Pinterest I keep a general outfits/style board, few board of specific celebs I like when I need general/vibes inspo, and then I have boards with outfits that feature specific pieces of clothing, though sometimes it can be very general (e.g. “cool denim shapes” is one) and sometimes v literal/specific for a new piece I love & have trouble styling/am stuck in one outfit for - save anything with an even vaguely similar silhouette/shape/cut etc and for the first few months of wearing it I just open up the board and scroll to see what I feel like that day.

Ok I love the sound of your Pinterest organization. I recently started a new board called “closet items” because I want to stockpile photos that have items I already own (or an equivalent).

Ahaha I love it!! I feel like this kind of Pinterest use comes in clutch for the “need caffeine” mornings lol. Also WOW the affiliate links with increased transparency is AMAZING! I am also so into this idea of a ribbon-wrapped claw-clip as someone who has never once had a ribbon STAY where I put it in my hair 😂😂

Expand full comment

Don't you love that claw clip! I just chopped off my hair and then found that and felt immediate regret. I guess I'll see if I still like it when my hair is long again😂

Literally I’ve had my hair short for years and finally let it get past chin length a year ago and the BEST thing abt it (other than putting it up in insane heat lol) is GETTING TO USE FUN CLAW CLIPS!! It’ll be there when yours grows back, or some fun new trend hahaha

Well now I need to dig into my ribbon collection. Fun to see how the styling can make a ribbon feel new and cool vs. girly girl. Loved this a ton Kelly, per uuuusssuualll 😉

All the love and appreciation for you!

Love the idea of "outfit recipe" instead of "outfit formula"! Breaking down outfits into components and capturing the essence really helps us discover our "true taste." Thanks for the tips ❤️❤️❤️

Isn't Bari so brilliant for this distinction?!

Love zooming out and reframing the way we think about looks. So much creativity can come from being more abstract!

So into these ideas and am going to be doing the exercises with all of my pins from now on! Also wondering if we can get a link to your Pinterest…😏

Girl, I saw this and realized my Pinterest is so boring because (this is crazy) all my style pins are on hidden boards🙈 I deleted and reconfigure so much BUT I'm inspired to better organize a style section. SHARE YOURS!!

Great ideas and insights here! Can I ask about your Pinterest search terms? Do you use names, specifix items, vibes, something else entirely? I'm not completely happy with what Pinterslest serves me, it often seems dated and safe. Thanks!

I think my feed was best filled after I started looking at street style looks from different fashion weeks (mostly Copenhagen). Now I’m flooded with fun imagery. I feel like we all just have to be so careful with what we click on because then Pinterest wants to give it to us 100 fold 🤪

Thanks, I will try that!

Yes, yes yes! I have a “styling” board on Pinterest and all of these images are just ideas for getting dressed with what I have. Some of them are simply a reminder to wear a color or a color combination. Some are about try this big thing with this other big thing. Just about where is that white shirt I used to have and why aren’t I wearing it? Some are 100% just a vibe.

TOTALLY!! I love the idea ET had about different board for different things. Harness what you can from a picture and leave the rest.

Love loved this! One of my favorite creators I started following when I decided I wanted to shop less (https://www.youtube.com/@Christinamychas) does a great job of explaining style elements and how to re-invent an outfit you like by shopping similar colors, silhouettes, and vibes in your own closet. It's so helpful to be able to recognize why you like a piece (thinking the creator is pretty is so real) so you can recreate its vibe without actually buying all the items they're wearing.

Thanks for unpacking this and love the partnership with The Curated Tastemaker! Two of my favorite Substackers coming together is a Monday treat. 🍬

Yes!! I love Christina, who I discovered via her podcast and only recently found her YT! My favorite thing about Christina is her back-story and financial savvy.

Kelly, Bari, you rock! Thanks for this. I often look back at photos I saved for inspiration and try to pinpoint what exactly it is about the outfit that calls to me (and yes, sometimes it is because the person is pretty!). You've broken down three formulas for me to consider. I started a Winter No-Buy yesterday, so this is the perfect time to play in my closet and try to recreate looks I've saved using silhouette, color, and essence. Looking forward to more from both of you - thank you!

Hi Reiko, so so happy this resonated. Agreed with Kelly- I'd love to hear more about your no-buy, they can be incredibly enlightening and inspiring partnered with the spirits of creativity and ingenuity!!

Reiko! I’m so thrilled you liked this post. I think it’s SUPER helpful when partnered with a low buy and, generally, wanting to utilize your closet and tap into your personal style. I hope you’ll share more about your no-buy!!

I'm a big fan of Pinterest, too. I feel like out of all of my social media channels, it understands me the best. The algorithm actually works for me! I'm definitely questioning Notes. I find myself scrolling it at times the same way I used to scroll IG, more or less mindlessly. But I also find good things to read with its help, so it's not all bad. I just have to be careful so that I don't overdo it.

The outfit recipe idea is really fascinating and eye-opening, even though I'm personally somewhat removed from analyzing outfits in detail. Still, so much inspiration! Thank you!

I'm finally catching up to my reading! I've been so busy this summer that I haven't had the time to be very active on Substack. I have so freaking many newsletters saved and/or unread in my email it's not even funny! 😄

I have reread this a few times along with the note. It is so hard to breakdown outfit elements! Is it just me? I am sure it takes lots of practice but its like I need a study group for this.

Oh Joslin I feel this! We should trade Pinterest photos and see if we can do it together!

Loved this one so much!! A huge reason I don’t love capsule wardrobes is because it seems very copy paste forward to me which isn’t helpful when figuring out how we want to dress and feel.

I will be doing these exercises next time I save a photo from Pinterest. Thank you both!!

I spent way too long trying to copy-paste outfits that I saw. I'm still not always good at separating the feelings about the outfit/picture from it but this helped!! Bari is so brilliant.

This is such great advice- I need to get back into Pinterest to get my creative style juices flowing! Thank you both for a great piece!

Soooo glad you liked in Dina! 💕

Thaaaaank you for saying this! Pinterest (and other social-esque style content for that matter) is way better when not interpreted as a 'must add to cart'. My personal fave way of using Pinterest is as an annual 'vibeboard' i.e. make a new one each year for the kind of style I aspire to live in, not exactly replicate. Also they make me happy to look back at year on year :)

Expand full comment

Oooh you are so so smart for having a vibe board. I also want to see yours now 😉 I think there is a shift we are all (slowly) making that shopping isn't necessarily the fun of fashion.

Expand full comment

Ah! And I would SO share 'em execpt that they're all private cos I mix in the odd inspirational quote. It's very teen vibes board tbh. Strong agree on the shift happening - love to see it!
