Inspiration from Celebrities (They Are Just Like Us!)
Plus leaning into a statement piece via SATC
Recently I have been VERY into looking at celebrity street-style pictures for inspiration. I save one pin of Jennifer Lawrence walking down the street and my algorithm delivers me a homepage full of them (I’m not complaining!)
Jennifer Lawrence was my gateway drug but it quickly evolved into Katie Holmes sprinkled with Kendall Jenner.
I’m acutely aware that Kendall Jenner’s street style is well-known (enough to garner a Bottega Venetta ad that mimics pap shots) and that Jennifer Lawrence’s work with her stylist has made her an unofficial face for The Row. Nonetheless, there is something very REAL about the looks I find myself pinning.
Here’s where (I confess) things took a turn for the creepy. I found an image of Katie Holmes that linked back to the website CelebMafia which is a conglomerate of actual paparazzi shots of celebrities by day. I would happily discuss how these women deserve their privacy but at the same time if you click on certain celebrity names on CelebMafia you will find an aggregate of social media postings of OOTDs so I think this is a floss-sized line we walk.
All of that to say, I have been so inspired by the candid streetstyle photos because it gives a real glimpse into celebrity closets- or at least what they reach for on a daily basis. It made me realize that my closet is made up of many of the same foundational pieces and I can, actually, recreate some of the looks quite simply in my own wardrobe.
High on the list of repeat offenders are; adidas sambas (Katie Holmes), baseball caps (Jennifer Lawrence), straight leg denim (Kendall Jenner).
A few weeks ago
linked to a Vogue article about how “Malia Obama Is the Reigning Queen of Gen Z Style” and lo-and-behold there were candid streetstyle photos of Malia that punctuates her personal style because, in part, the pictures look personal.I think we all have memories in our mind of someone we found to be genuinely stylish. For me, it was a friend in my early 20s. She understood what was trendy but always presented through a lens of what she liked. She was the first person I saw pin photos of NYC Fashion Week street style and then brought the feeling of that into her outfits. I would check out her closet, I loved seeing what she had, but was always stuck by the fact that her closet wasn’t made up of spectacular pieces, just great basics that she knew how to style.
So often, the style that inspires us doesn’t come from posed OOTDs or styled videos, but rather what they show up in day-to-day.
Speaking of someone whose style is often applauded; Carrie Bradshaw. I am still deep in a rewatch of Sex and the City and found a few episodes where Carrie leans HARD into a statement accessory; the rosette. Seeing said rosette reminded me of the fun of fashion.
I was laughing to myself seeing the sheer number of times she wore a rosette in the span of a few episodes but I also applauded the commitment. If you love an accessory (and the same can be said for a trend); go hard for it! Wear it out. Who cares if you look back on the photos and shake your head at the way you were wearing ANOTHER statement earring, etc. Fashion is meant to be fun.
In general love airport shots so much. Used to always look for these at Outfit ID. Legit RAN to this site. Thank you for walking the floss sized line for us.
Celebs wearing clothes in the wild is such a rabbit hole! Carrie's style was always about the attitude + a commitment to experimentation. Such a great reminder to not take things too seriously and not forget how to 'play'...even as an adult.
