I love this! It’s especially top of mind for someone like me who does not have innate personal style but loves style. Like -- do I have the right to curate style? Is it communal and kind or plagiarism? Am I making it “my own” -- writing this from aboard the red sock train. Something I grapple with. 😘
I so struggle with this too because style is also not as innate for me as it is for most people so I need the Leandra's of the world to help guide me into what is coming/cool/etc. I think my struggle in the world of social media is when one person wears an outfit and the masses flock to copy it with the exact same brands without asking if it fits within their lifestyle. I think where Amy Smilovic and Allison Bornstein have helped the masses (including me) is by asking us to focus on how we would describe our own style. By being able to describe our style, we can better figure if a trend fits within it. Of course, these are the things I mull over.
Great post! I have been thinking about this a bit. One of the best things I’ve personally done for my style is work with a stylish I really click with. She takes the things I like and shares suggestions for what’s on trend in a way that is always spot on for me. I will probably write about the experience soon. Have a great weekend!
Catherine! Please please do a write up about this as working with a stylist has been top of mind for me recently (Irene Kim would be a dream to talk to). If I’m being honest I need to work up the courage to humble myself enough to admit that I need help 😉 frankly in the era of influencers- we probably all need help to not just copy outfits that either don’t fit our lifestyle, body shape, etc.

Yes that makes sense -- looking critically at trends. Curating what’s for you.
