So you're telling me I SHOULDN'T wear my tank down to my hip bones with two other tanks layered over top and a Von Dutch hat? OK, good to know

😂 OMG the good ole days. I have a mental of Christina Aguliera sporting this exact look.

But what about that fake bottom tank kinda tank top thing that goes around your waist to suck it in and look like a longer underneath tank? I can’t wear that either?!?! (Maybe that was just a pregnant thing…)

Want to shout out the $20 built-in bra rib cotton tanks at Uniqlo. The bras are actually supportive snd hold up after washing. As a large chested person, it’s so freeing to have that cool, easy breezy no bra look in the summer.

Ok, forgive me for going here, but do the BIB also contain prominent nipples? That’s an- ahem- issue for me so I usually wear nipple covers regardless but sometimes that’s yucky in sweaty weather.

Expand full comment
Jess Finn's avatar

They’re lightly padded, so in my experience there’s no nipple show through

Yes to this! Literally found a $6 white tank I love and bought it in every color. Just did a styling session wearing it all different ways. Your chart at the end is brilliant!

I left a comment but I don’t see it! We’ll see if it ends up appearing twice … ok, it makes me sad to say this, but the $95 re/done tank top is amazing. I didn’t want it to be true! But I’ve found myself reaching for it more than all my other tanks. Sigh…. But I LOVE those JH and BC pants on you!!! And also the Doen yellow tank. And also all of it.

*Whispering* Emily, I totally know what you are talking about! I got a Re/Done Hanes t-shirt for an ungodly amount of money and I love it more than I thought I could. I'm going to quietly add the tank to my wishlist 😂 *done whispering*

I just moved back to Florida after 16 years in the north (to the town where I grew up, woof) and it’s already soooo hot. 🥵 I’ve been staring at my closet realizing I need to embrace tanks in a bigger way now and thus spent too much time searching for options this weekend. Thanks for the hot weather inspo and loving the suggestions from commenters here!

Team Thick Straps reporting for duty!! I love the simplicity of a tank in the summer but as a chesty gal, wearing a bra with a cotton tank is a non negotiable! I love the way you’ve broken it down and I agree they’re the perfect complement to so many bottoms - I esp love them with more voluminous skirts!!

My favorite tank top is from Amazon 🫣🥲 but they are quite perfect and come in 2 lengths. I buy both lengths in white, grey and black, and wear them all into the ground. Just restocked for summer actually, so this post’s timing couldn’t be better!!! So much inspo I love love love it PER USUAL.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B21DWPN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I co-sign on this tank top in both the long and short length too!! I have the white in "long" which is really more like a normal length and a grey in the "short" length which hits me perfectly at the top of my pants. YES to sharing this!!!

I am wearing the M here and I’m a solid 27 (sometimes 28) in pants. I think these run a bit small especially considering they are meant to be a drawstring situation. Please tell me if you buy!! I am loving how the yellow doesn’t read crazy bright, it makes me curious about the green color too.

The Hummingbird tank by FP is hands down the best tank I own. Have it in two colors and need more. I also love the End Game Pointelle tank by FP, the details are just enough to add something more & the fit is sexy. Highly recommend!

Hanes kid boys tanks, size M/L. The utter best, last forever. Only downside is they are a bit see through so WEAR TWO AT ONCE (they come in multipacks). Also then I don’t need a bra. Win.

For black colour tanks it’s still only the Raey (rip) square neck spaghetti strap ones for me. I stockpiled before it was too late.

Leave it to Kelly Williams to teach us something new about an item we thought we knew everything about. THE CHART!!!! I have that free people tank you linked as your favorite and find myself reaching for it often, too! I also love the Eva tank from anine bing and my pointelle tank from leset. For a lonnnnnggg time I was repeat wearing a white tank from Amazon (!!) that was maybe $7 but (not surprisingly) it stopped feeling good after too many washes. I try to really pay attention to materials now. Great piece, friend!

I love this! Also: The brand OGL recently Instagram–pestered me into buying two of their built-in bra tanks and they are sooooo good. A little thick so they may not be ideal for the hottest days of summer, but they're so cute and comfortable and really elegant-looking. A little '90s in the right way (kind of boat neck-y). https://oglmove.com/products/plantive-open-back-brami-tank-1
