Friend, yet again you confirm all the thoughts that have been floating in my brain because we truly think in the same way. And for that, I am so grateful, because you are so good at articulating what so many of us are already feeling and thinking, but in a way that feels easy to digest and translate into our own wardrobes. I personally love trends, I think they are a great way to update our wardrobe seasonally and stay relevant while still being true to who we are. Bravo a million times over, and I CANNOT wait to get my Midimalist merch!!!!

Thank you for this!! I think for most anyone who enjoys fashion we HAVE to find ways to make trends work for us because- as Allison said- it’s what makes us look modern and that’s FUN.

PS- cannot wait to have matching totes!

I cannot wait to receive the blue tote in the mail, just ordered! So exciting.

You have such a fantastic way of dissecting fashion and putting it into digestible words so well. Could not agree more about track pants and the denim version we are all loving lately.

Eeeee! Evonne I also ordered blue! I’m so excited.

Thank you for seeing my weird vision for how current denim trends feel related to track pants. It’s not a perfect comparison but it’s not wrong either 😉

Yes to the concept of dressing 'modern' instead of 'trendy' and 'simply' adjusting your own personal style with modern elements, such as silhouettes, details and proportions! The sheer trend and the track suits trend were very good examples! For me, it's also oversized blazers: I've been wearing them for twenty years now and they just change in shape, silhouettes and material!

Yes!! I can see they have been a mainstay in your personal style and that’s- in part- because you’ve really made them as your OWN! Not wearing them just the way that is hot in any given moment.

I hate that “trend” has become a bad word. Thank you for breaking it down and showing that it’s OKAY to follow and enjoy trends when they fit your style and life.

YES! And between us, we’ll start saying things like “I like the idea of looking modern through mesh shoes” so we don’t have to say trend 😆

LOvvveee and congrats on the merch! I'm wondering your thoughts on the difference between these two types of things. The first I'm thinking of includes mesh shoes, red socks and maybe barrel denim. We haven't seen these in ages (if ever) and they're more of a Very Hot Item vs a classic thing that's having a moment. Into the 2nd category I'd put Western wear, button ups, loafers, etc. The latter being things that come and go, and might be having a big moment right now-- but won't totally date you down the line. PS I think both types are fun and I do not find trendy to be a dirty word and now I need track pants, damn it.

Yes to this distinction!! I would say sheer/track pant is the first category; the VHI. In which case I look for the variation of it that feels most natural to me. So when barrel was big I opted for the more subtle one because I was transitioning from (basically) skinny jeans and I didn’t want to overwhelm my senses. But for the Western trend (or Mermaid Mother, Desert Aunt, etc.) then I just choose an element that I know I can pair with my go-tos.

This is so good, Kelly! At the end of the day, trends are always repeating — and many are already woven into our personal style. That’s why I don’t see investing in a “trend” as a waste of money, as long as you understand how it supports your style and works with what you already own.

YES AND THANK YOU!! We are on the same page. And, as I wrote, there will be trends that are dating but I don’t care if I love them a lot right now.

Yes like what you mentioned about jelly shoes, I see then on others and I love them but I know for me they won’t be practical so I move on and chose something better for my lifestyle and style. I think the problem is that people buy into trends without knowing their style and trends can confuse them even more.

You nailed it. Yes!! And- I’ll admit- that was a problem for me at one point too. Thank goodness for maturing!

I love the reframe of “trend” to “modern”!! As someone who participated in both the sheer flats and track pant trends, I cannot tell you how much contemplating went into those purchases because I was so worried about them being too “trendy”. But you’re absolutely right that, as long as you find a way to make them work for you and your life, there’s not much to regret. Also, the totes look amazing - so excited to order mine! x

I remember reading about your back-and-forth on ordering mesh shoes and I thought that was such a perfect example of how we all feel! The very real fear that something will be “over” by the time we purchase. And yet the shoes fit in your style so perfectly.

I always struggle with the first reaction when I try on a new silhouette! What if my eye needs to adjust, as A,y from Tibi always says?

Expand full comment
Kelly Williams's avatar

I absolutely think our eyes need time! I was sparked to write this because of the changing denim silhouette because we were in our skinny era for so long. I’m always weighing my initial reaction against the degree to which I invest. For example; tabis gave me an ick the first time I saw them. Now I’m intrigued but I probably wouldn’t buy genuine tabis because the cost is high!
